<title>Option for simple on-farm water treatment: A case study of the Agrivoltaic project in Katibougou, Mali</title>

In Katibougou, Mali, the Agrivoltaic project offers a viable path toward sustainable&#13;
development. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these programs depends on guaranteeing the&#13;
purity of the water sources used on farms. This study explores various options for purifying&#13;
on-farm water in the framework of Katibougou's Agrivoltaic project. Significant issues with&#13;
water management were found, such as non-functional boreholes, insufficient supervision of&#13;
water use, and low water quality 50% of the community site's visited boreholes had a strange&#13;
color. The Agrivoltaic Project (APV) site and the community site in Katibougou were&#13;
compared for water quality, and the results indicated that there were notable differences in&#13;
turbidity levels between the two sites. In general, samples from the APV project site had&#13;
lower turbidity than those from the community site, which reached 20 NTU.In a similar vein,&#13;
both locations satisfied FAO requirements for electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids,&#13;
pH, and alkalinity, suggesting that they were suitable for irrigation. Potassium contents,&#13;
however, showed significant variations, with higher levels ranging from 5.25 to 16.65 mg/l&#13;
found in both the APV project site samples and the community site borehole sample.&#13;
Treatment recommendations included potassium management, pH correction, and sediment&#13;
filtration.The study makes several recommendations to address these issues, including better&#13;
security measures, oversight mechanisms for water usage, regular borehole maintenance,&#13;
investment in on-farm water treatment infrastructure, community awareness campaigns about&#13;
water conservation, and cooperation between local government agencies, stakeholders, and&#13;
academic institutions for additional research

The current was done in the context of the prevailing effects of climate change in ensuring &#13;
security and sustainability in the resource systems of Water, Energy and Food. It explored the &#13;
level of adoption of the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus approach for climate change &#13;
adaptation in Cameroon through a comprehensive analysis. The main objective was to &#13;
comprehensively assess the current state of art in terms of integrating the WEF nexus approach &#13;
in the Country. The specific objectives were: to analyse changing patterns of WEF nexus &#13;
indicators over five years, to examine the evolution of nexus potential in strategic documents, &#13;
and to assess at the operational level, the nexus potential of projects from relevant ministries &#13;
integrating the three systems. The methodology employed encompassed linear correlation &#13;
analysis for the identification of potential synergies and trade-offs; a chronological and &#13;
comparative examination of strategic documents with respect to some predefined WEF nexus &#13;
criteria, and the analysis of the WEF nexus potential in some projects. The main results of the &#13;
study reveal some synergies between Energy-Food and Water-Energy, with Energy and Water &#13;
exerting the highest influence on the WEF nexus index variation. Moreover, a growing nexus &#13;
potential is observed in strategic documents over time, particularly in National Determined &#13;
Contributions (NDCs); and the. Despite some deficiencies in technology involvement and &#13;
stakeholder consideration, opportunities exist to enhance WEF nexus adoption in adaptation &#13;
documents. Furthermore, project analysis identifies several initiatives with moderate to high &#13;
nexus potential is observed from 2005 to 2021, suggesting the feasibility of mainstreaming the &#13;
Hoff's framework for improved integration. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for &#13;
updating institutional coordination, capacity building, evidence-based decision-making, policy &#13;
coherence, and adaptive governance to effectively incorporate WEF nexus considerations into &#13;
national frameworks, ultimately advancing climate change adaptation efforts and sustainable &#13;
development goals in Cameroon

The study investigated the determinants of the uptake of agricultural water management techniques &#13;
by small holder farmers in Laikipia County. A mixed methods research design was used with a &#13;
sample of 100 farmers. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the respondents of &#13;
qualitative data while purposive sampling was used to select respondents of quantitative data. &#13;
Quantitative data was collected through structured questionnaires while qualitative data was collected &#13;
through focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Analysis of quantitative data was &#13;
done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 26. Quantitative data was presented using &#13;
descriptive and inferential statistics. Qualitative data was analyzed using NVivo software version 12 &#13;
and presented in verbatim. The correlation analysis showed education (β=4.293), belonging to a &#13;
farmer group (β=2.895), access to credit (β=2.032), access to extension (β=2.696) among other &#13;
factors influenced the uptake of water management techniques positively. The study further identified &#13;
opportunities available to enhance the uptake of water management techniques such as ground water &#13;
exploitation, investing in e-extension to train farmers and intensifying surface runoff harvesting. The &#13;
study recommends the allocation of more resources towards farmer education by the government, &#13;
building of robust weather forecast systems by the meteorological department and creation of Public&#13;
Private Partnerships to provide farmers with credit at affordable rates in order to support those with &#13;
financial constraints in investing in water management techniques.

<summary type="text">CONFLICT IN AGRICULTURAL POLICIES IN ACCOMMODATING  RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN AFRICA:  A CASE STUDY OF MALAWI

Malawi, just like many African countries is struggling with inadequate agricultural productivity, &#13;
making it difficult to meet the food demand of its growing population. This leads to increased &#13;
demand for water and energy resources in agriculture production, posing environmental threats. &#13;
Recent advancements like the water, energy, and food (WEF) nexus concept can increase food &#13;
production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This could improve food availability, ensuring a &#13;
steady supply amidst climate change, and poverty. However, national policies often adopt a &#13;
sectorial approach, neglecting potential interdependencies and conflicts that may arise from cross&#13;
sectoral integration. This study, therefore, examines the conflict in agricultural policies in &#13;
accommodating recent advancements in the agricultural sector in Malawi. The study set out to &#13;
explore four research questions. The study uses a qualitative method design with Key-informant &#13;
interviews and document reviews. A total of twenty-eight respondents were interviewed which &#13;
included sixteen experts and twelve farmers and ten policy documents were purposelessly &#13;
sampled. The NVIVO 14 Software was used to analyze the data collected. The results show that &#13;
the use of the WEF nexus concept as a selected recent advancement in the agriculture sector in &#13;
Malawi boosts crop yields, diversifies cropping patterns, and extends the growing season beyond &#13;
traditional rain-fed cycles. It also contributes to rural development, job creation, and &#13;
entrepreneurship. However, the implementation of the WEF nexus faces challenges such as poor &#13;
irrigation development, catchment conservation, and technical, socioeconomic, and policy issues. &#13;
The study further reveals that policies like Malawi Vision 2063 and Nation Agriculture Policy &#13;
align with the WEF nexus concept in Malawi's agriculture sector, but inconsistencies and conflicts &#13;
within existing frameworks hinder the effective implementation of integrated WEF approaches for &#13;
sustainable development, including a lack of coordinated sectoral policies, competing interests, &#13;
poor governance, and climate change. The study recommends the government create a coordinated &#13;
policy framework that accommodates recent advancements and integrates water, energy, and food &#13;
sectors, and the government should incorporate the WEF nexus concept into the Universities, &#13;
Secondary, and Primary school curriculums.
