This study examines the critical role of urban and peri-urban forests in mitigating and adapting
to climate change in Niger's city of Niamey. The study uses a combination of spatial analysis,
remote sensing, and modeling techniques to evaluate changes in Niamey's forest cover,
temperature, and population distribution from 1992 to 2023. The results indicate a significant
loss of woodland, a concerning rise in maximum and minimum temperatures, and a rapid
increase in the urban population. The study emphasizes a substantial negative correlation
between vegetation cover and surface temperatures, emphasizing the importance of urban
forests in regulating the local microclimate. Additionally, areas with the highest population
density coincide with pronounced urban heat islands, increasing the vulnerability of
populations to the dangers associated with climate change. This research offers valuable
information to inform policies and strategies that promote the sustainable management of urban
forests in Niamey to enhance the city's resilience to climate change.

POSSET, Kokou Romaric
The increasing interest in harnessing carbon market finance to foster green innovation and
entrepreneurship mirrors the worldwide dedication to addressing climate change and attaining
sustainable development goals. In West Africa, notably in Benin Republic, the distinctive challenges
and opportunities faced, including the promotion of sustainable practices across sectors such as
agriculture, forestry, renewable energy, and waste management, emphasize the importance of delving
into carbon finance as a catalyst for environmental initiatives and economic advancement. This
highlights the imperative to explore how carbon market mechanisms can bolster green projects and
empower youth innovators and entrepreneurs not only in Benin but also in neighboring countries.
This master’s Dissertation delves into exploring carbon market finance as a catalyst for sustainable
development initiatives in Benin Republic, West Africa. The study investigates the potential impact
of leveraging carbon credits in key sectors such as forestry, renewable energy, agriculture, and waste
disposal to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote eco-friendly practices. Through a
comprehensive analysis of implementing carbon credit projects, including project conceptualization,
design, monitoring, and market integration, valuable insights are gained into the opportunities and
challenges of utilizing carbon finance in the region. By examining the current state of the carbon
market in West Africa, with a specific focus on Benin, this research contributes to the existing body
of knowledge on climate change mitigation strategies and sustainable development practices. The
study underscores the importance of collaboration among policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, and
stakeholders to drive innovation and knowledge sharing in green finance.
Key recommendations are provided for policymakers to enact supportive regulations, investors to
fund sustainable projects, entrepreneurs to engage in green initiatives, and stakeholders to foster
collaboration and knowledge exchange. The findings of this research highlight the significant role of
carbon market finance in advancing sustainable development goals and addressing environmental
challenges in the region. Through a multidisciplinary approach that combines environmental science,
economics, and policy analysis, this study offers valuable insights for academia, policymakers,
industry practitioners, and environmental advocates seeking to promote sustainable development
through carbon finance mechanisms in West Africa.

The Role of Blockchain in Establishing and Enabling Transparent Carbon Markets in Africa
In response to calls for more ambition to address climate change, carbon markets have emerged as
pivotal mechanisms, enabling the trading of credits to curb global emissions and catalyze financial
support for development initiatives. Despite their significance, concerns persist regarding the
transparency of existing carbon markets, prompting exploration into blockchain technology as a
potential solution. This study delves into the practical considerations for implementing blockchain
to augment transparency in both established and emerging carbon credit markets across Africa.
Employing a Decision Framework for blockchain adoption and the Decision-Making Trial and
Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), the research aims to provide project developers with
informed insights into the suitability of blockchain solutions and the key factors enabling its
adoption as an alternative market framework. The study also endeavors to devise a conceptual
model for a blockchain-backed carbon trading market, designed to strengthen the transparency and
efficiency of transactions, data aggregation, and National Determined Contributions (NDCs)
tracking, while aligning with the global architecture of carbon monitoring and reporting at the
UNFCCC. Findings reveal that smart contracts, data security and privacy, regulatory frameworks,
and transparency emerge as key enablers influencing blockchain adoption. These insights offer
guidance to policymakers and project developers in Africa, providing essential data points to
catalyze discussions and propose measures aimed at overcoming barriers to blockchain adoption
on the continent, thereby facilitating enhanced transparency in carbon markets.

ASSESSING CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION STRATEGIES IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES: A CASE OF MATSAPHA INDUSTRIAL AREA, ESWATINI
Masuku, Makhosazana Ngci
Climate change mitigation in the manufacturing sector is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions and promoting sustainable industrial practices. In Eswatini, the industrial
sector contributes the largest in GHG emissions countrywide. Therefore, this study assesses
the extent of GHG emissions from manufacturing industries in the Matsapha Industrial Area,
Eswatini, and evaluates their mitigation measures. Additionally, it explores the level of
climate change awareness among industry stakeholders, employees, and local residents while
identifying existing policies governing the sector. Data was collected through questionnaires
and analyzed using SPSS. The findings indicate limited knowledge of climate change across
stakeholders, a lack of formal policies regulating industrial emissions, and minimal employee
training on climate-related issues. Furthermore, most industries are aware of climate change
but do not consistently track their GHG emissions, and there is no awareness of carbon market
mechanisms. These results highlight the need for comprehensive climate policies, increased
stakeholder education, and structured emission monitoring frameworks to enhance climate
change mitigation in the manufacturing sector.
